Let’s talk science!
While I was studying to get my bachelor’s degree in geophysics from the Colorado School of Mines, an opportunity popped up to assist a grad student with field work to support their thesis. I applied and, much to my surprise, was selected to help. Our team drove from Golden, CO to Washington with trucks packed to the brim with equipment. Once we arrived, we loaded all our gear into a helicopter and were dropped on the pumice plain right below Mount St. Helens. We spent about two weeks in the field, camping, hiking through ash, and collecting data. During the volcanic eruption in the 80’s the lake that was at the foot of Mount St. Helens was covered by ash, creating a natural dam known as the pumice plain. It was of concern that over time the lake was beginning to cut tunnels through the pumice plain and in the event of heavy flooding this could potentially cause the pumice plain to give way to a mud flow that would cover the towns below. We collected many different forms of data (ground penetrating radar, seismic, etc) to located possible tunnels in the pumice plain. I had never been so happy to take a shower after weeks of living primitively on top of volcanic ash, but it was truly the trip of a lifetime and gave me an even greater love for my career field.
