White Pocket's geological story began about 160–180 million years ago, when the region was a vast desert covered by enormous sand dunes. Over time, the sand was buried, compacted, and transformed into what we refer to as Navajo Sandstone.
Tectonic uplift later exposed the sandstone to millions of years of wind and water erosion, creating White Pocket’s dramatic swirls, ridges, and unusual formations. Chemical weathering also produced its striking colors, with iron oxide creating the red, orange, and pink tones and iron-poor sandstone contributing to the bright white areas. Together, these geological processes created the surreal landscape that makes White Pocket so remarkable.
