Several years ago, my mom and I headed to Alamogordo, NM to celebrate Mother's Day. At the top of our itinerary was visiting White Sands National Park, home of the largest gypsum dunefield. The dunefield encompasses about 275-square miles and it's story began about 280 million years ago when this area was covered by the Permian Sea. The gypsum settled on the sea floor and eventually the sea fully evaporated. Now through an endless cycle of erosion and renewal the dunefield continues to change every day. While gypsum is a fairly common mineral found all over the work, it is rarely found in sand form (any mineral that is 0.065mm-2mm in diameter).
